Investors are waiting bitterly for this week’s most important macro data, U.S. inflation in May. Annual inflation has risen to 8.6% from 8.3% instead of the expected 8.31 (the highest since 1981)
Breaking down the inflation data, we get spectacular numbers:
- food + 11.9% year-on-year - highest increase since 1979
- chicken + 17.4% - the highest price ever
- restaurant prices + 9% - the highest price ever
- fuel + 10% - the highest price ever
- electricity + 12% - the highest since 2006
- apartment rents + 5.2% - the highest rents since 1987
- air ticket + 37.8% - the highest prices since 1980
- services + 5.7% - the highest prices since 1990
Jonathan Millar is therefore no longer expecting a 50 bps rate hike from the Fed this week. Also on Friday, CNBC employee Jim Cramer predicted a 100 basis point increase from the Fed. Cramer believes the market could bounce to an aggressive raise.
The Fed will decide on the interest rate at 20:00 on Wednesday 15th Central European Time.
