Should any European government give financial aid to a Chinese-controlled company? We doubt that Beijing would extend the same generosity to European companies. The French government, which is going through its own debt crisis, should probably have other priorities than helping Lilium’s to “expand its high-volume production capacity”, whatever that means for a company that can’t fly its eVTOL for more than a few minutes.

Lilium presents itself as a European company, but it is increasingly a Chinese company Lilium with its German operations and Dutch registration comes across as a natural candidate for European government support. However, its shareholding is increasingly dominated by China’s Tencent Holdings.  Currently, Tencent owns 22.0% of Lilium, and that stake could rise to 38.1%, through 160.2 million outstanding warrants, which Tencent received in exchange for providing $100m of funding in May 2023. These penny warrants are comfortably in-the-money, with their strike price at $0.05, versus the $0.50 stock price – meaning it is only a matter of time before Tencent exercises

In contrast, competitor Joby Aviation has demonstrated the ability to fly 154.6 miles over 1 hour and 17 minutes. Over the last four years, Joby has completed more than 1,500 test flights, including ~100 with a pilot onboard. Toyota was happy to invest another $500m in Joby earlier in the month. Lilium’s investors, such as Tencent or the investment vehicle of Skype’s founder, appear tired of pouring money into this bottomless pit

But ask the simple question: “For how long can that eVTOL fly?” The answer is a mere five and a half minutes — without any passenger or cargo — according to the last available data.
