China makes almost all the world's gallium - a metal that's essential for advanced chips used in 5G towers, military radars, and satellites.
China has started restricting exports of gallium and even the technology to extract it, basically weaponizing its monopoly the same way OPEC once did with oil.
India's NALCO (a government aluminium company) has been talking about extracting gallium from its own bauxite for 30 years since 1994.
Gallium is literally a byproduct sitting inside Indian bauxite ore. It's there for the taking. But nothing meaningful has been built yet.
Three reasons:
First, speed. The US and Kazakhstan started much later but are already building plants that will produce gallium by 2026.
India, which had its own bauxite all along, is still at the "pilot project" stage. Real production won't come until 2028.
By then, Japan, Korea, and Germany will have already locked in alternative suppliers. India will have missed the window where the world was desperate for a non-China source.
Second, scale mismatch. Even when NALCO eventually produces gallium, they're talking about maybe 10 tonnes a year.
At current prices that's roughly ₹400 crore in revenue a rounding error for a ₹16,800 crore company. So the commercial incentive is weak, and PSUs don't move without strong commercial incentives.
Third, strategic blindness. The real value of gallium isn't the ₹400 crore revenue. It's that gallium nitride (GaN) chips are replacing silicon in defence electronics, radar, 5G, and space systems.
Whoever controls gallium supply has leverage over the entire semiconductor supply chain.
India talks about self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat) but treats gallium like a minor aluminium byproduct instead of a national security asset.
China's gallium export suspension expires in November 2026. Why does that deadline actually make India's delay worse, not better?
Think about what Beijing can do once the suspension period ends and what that means for countries that haven't secured their own supply by then.
this is story of rare earth and much of the holding of this ETF is of CHINA

Die nächsten Wochen werden spannend. Sobald belastbare Verarbeitungsmengen erreicht werden stehen sie hoffentlich im Focus der Förderbank.

A recent @BBC article highlights novel technological approaches to addressing the West’s rare earth midstream processing gap, where China controls ~90% of global REE processing capacity.
Pleased to see @Metallium_MTM, @DrJamesTour and our Flash Joule Heating (FJH) technology included, demonstrating how industrial waste streams are often richer sources of critical metals than traditional mined ores.
