China’s open-source artificial intelligence models accounted for nearly 30 per cent of total global use of the technology, while Chinese-language prompts ranked second in token volume behind English, according to a report.

Among major Chinese rivals, ByteDance’s Doubao – the country’s most popular AI app with 167.91 million MAUs – posted growth of 5.33 per cent in November, while the flagship app from Hangzhou-based start-up DeepSeek saw MAUs decline a further 3.72 per cent, the data showed. US start-up OpenAI’s ChatGPT app remained the global leader, with 775.57 million MAUs, although its growth had slowed to below 1 per cent.
