Eli Lilly seems to have reinforced its competitive edge over rival Novo Nordisk, as complete results from the head-to-head SURMOUNT-5 trial published Sunday show its obesity treatment Zepbound (tirzepatide), which targets both GIP and GLP-1 receptors, outperformed the Danish company's GLP-1 drug Wegovy (semaglutide) across all measured weight reduction targets. Detailed findings from the Phase IIIb study, presented at the European Congress on Obesity (ECO) and simultaneously published in NEJM, expand on December's top-line results which had already demonstrated Zepbound's superior efficacy with 47% greater weight loss than Wegovy after 72 weeks of treatment (20.2% vs. 13.7%). The full range of secondary endpoint results unveiled Sunday paints a picture of Zepbound's consistent advantage over Wegovy.
