Harmony Gold finally turns over a new leaf So, Harmony Gold finally turned a profit after more than three years of building up an accumulated loss of R4.5 billion. Another encouraging sign was that Harmony's cash position only declined by R38 million to R867 million during the quarter. This small cash decline comes after large cash outflows over the past three years due to restructuring, the Gold Fields bid and investments in five projects. The slowdown in the cash outflow definitely reduces some concerns that Harmony could go bust in the medium to long term. Harmony had also faced the possibility of having its credit rating downgraded to the risky, but high-yield, junk status. But now it is time for Harmony to start showing net cash inflows. So while congratulations are due, they must be tempered with concerns about the high cost of its operations, which could affect the sustainability of the recovery. These high costs leave the company vulnerable to any downswing in the gold price. Harmony needs to move from barely surviving to thriving and it can only do that by improving the quality of its assets, by building or acquiring low-cost gold mines. The company is spending $702 million (R5.2 billion) on five projects, four of them in South Africa and one in Papua New Guinea. However, whether these projects pan out and provide Harmony with lower-cost gold ounces has yet to be seen. During the September quarter, Harmony's working costs at its growth profit were R123 439 a kilogram, 2 percent higher than the previous quarter and higher than the group's average cash cost of R97 538 a kilogram. Investor sentiment towards Harmony appears to be turning now that the company's recovery is at long last starting to show through.
