The Novavax Dilemma Two months ago, the number of shorted shares in Novavax increased by 10 million shares, during which time the stock price dropped by around $2. Interestingly, this drop wasn’t accompanied by typical stop-loss sell-offs. On the contrary, it was met with increased buying from retail investors, which in turn pushed the stock price back up — but now with 10 million new shorted shares in play. This creates a significant burden on short sellers; it’s like a dormant fire steadily being fueled — and once ignited, it could become massive. Currently, with waning buying pressure, the situation may seem under control. However, the moment a new catalyst or hype appears, short sellers will likely have to short even more shares to keep the price contained — something that may no longer be sustainable. The bet now is that retail investors will sell once the stock rises, perhaps in the $10–$20 range. If that happens and short sellers avoid covering, they may let the stock settle into a new range where they can regain some control over the price action.
