On average, CRE loans account for about 9 percent of bank loan portfolios in Europe. Stress in the CRE sector can affect the financial system and economic activity significantly. Common exposures of banks and nonbank financial institutions to CRE *** risks to financial stability. As losses in CRE push banks’ profits down and erode capital, they will need to raise equity or reduce lending, reducing aggregate demand further and inducing a feedback loop, and thus affect economic activity. European CRE sectors are often economically large and labor intensive.
