Ballard Power Systems [NASDAQ:BLDP, TSX:BLDP], a Vancouver-based hydrogen fuel cell manufacturer, is looking at a wide swath of the hydrogen space for possible acquisitions, said outgoing CFO Tony Guglielmin. "I would certainly be surprised if we're not buyers next year," he said in a late-December interview. "I can tell you we've been working on quite a lot of opportunities." The company raised significant capital in 2020 as its share price soared and he said he expected the company to start 2021 with USD 775m in cash on the books and no debt after multiple offerings during 2020. That sets up the company to comfortably make buys up to USD 500m, with the potential to go larger using stock, he said. Ballard has a market cap of USD 6.3bn and its share price has more than tripled from its 52-week low. Guglielmin, who is slated to retire on 31 March, said the growing hydrogen market and the company's strengthening share price and balance sheet have had an effect on Ballard's thinking. The company once talked of acquisitions as being a tool to scale up and become an attractive target for a larger industrial or energy player. While it would have to consider serious offers to buy it as a public company, he said it is instead looking at buys to vertically integrate through the hydrogen stack and has been looking at "two or three key areas" beyond directly scaling its core fuel cell business. "There are real opportunities in the value chain," Guglielmin said. "We are looking at everything from electrolysis to distribution to fueling systems to physical things needed like tanks to system integration."
