Financials
CEO, K.R. Sridhar moved up profitability goals to FY2021 earlier this year. However, I have my reservations regarding this break-even target. BE expects to reach a gross margin of 30% by 2025, and has a target of 15-17% for Opex (R&D 8-9% of revenue and SG&A 7-8% of revenue).

One of the key drivers of profitability would be the $973 million FY2021 revenue given by analyst consensus, low estimates of $950 million was used in the calculations. This would imply a 19.6% Y-o-Y revenue growth, with the assumption of 24% gross profit margin over the next three accounting quarters (Q121 GAAP GM of 28.2%). If the rather optimistic gross margin holds at 25%, BE would have been halfway towards their long-term 30% GPM target. The probability of profitability in FY2021 is rather shaky, especially with BE's CEO moving up their EBITDA positive timeline from 2022 to 2021. Despite this, I do believe BE will comfortably achieve profitability in 2022.

Subsequent comparables with natural gas and biogas supplier FuelCell Energy (NASDAQ:FCEL) and hydrogen fuel cell maker Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ:BLDP), show that BE's price seems to be much more reasonable relative to these other companies.
Key Risk factors
Bloom Energy balance sheet looks healthy with a quick ratio of 1.41 as of FY2020, with $246 million being cash and cash equivalents. One of the primary concerns is the lack of customer diversification for Bloom Energy, with SK E&C (based in South Korea), and Duke Energy (NYSE:DUK) accounting for 34% and 28% of BE's total revenue as of FY2020, respectively. BE's reliance on Duke Energy revenue-wise, increased from 28% to 23%, and investors should watch for future partnerships and diversifications. Having said that, the increase in orders from DUK could signal pleasant fulfillment of products and services from BE.
A Future in the Present
Mass adaptation of hydrogen, as a form of highly transportable energy source, is still in the mid-term horizon. Despite this, Bloom Energy has seemed to found a sweet spot between providing for semi-clean energy which is further benefitted by its non-combustion Bloom Energy Servers, and hydrogen as an energy source. Investors should be observing the ability for Bloom Energy to turn profitable in FY2021, which would prove to be a turning point in the company's ambitious goals. I believe with a great vision and management team, Bloom Energy will be at the forefront of a seamless transition from traditional fuel sources to net-zero emission sources.

Investment Thesis
Bloom Energy (NYSE: BE) has been focused on sustainable energy production and its zero-emission trajectory using its Bloom Energy Server, since its inception back in 2001. Bloom Energy fills the gap of concealed cost due to unreliable electricity within the broader energy market, through the adaptation of their independent on-site microgrids. Furthermore, BE's business model provides both a short-term and mid- to long-term outlook, with their solid-oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology producing electricity using varied generation mix including natural gas, biogas, and hydrogen through a non-combustion electrochemical process, providing for decarbonization goals. The high power generation density is also a key factor which puts BE ahead of solar photovoltaic (PV) production.
Bloom Energy's Core Mantra and Business Model
BE's business model is based on the sale of its Bloom Energy Server fueled by its three core tenets- resilience, predictability, and sustainability. With product installations in place either through capital purchase or leasing, BE provides subsequent operation & maintenance (O&M) contracts including remote monitoring and diagnostics, power modules (refurbishment/repair), and power purchase agreements (PPAs). For 2021, revenue from capital purchases and leases is expected to be $800 million (84% of total revenue), with O&M filling up the subsequent $150 million (16% of total revenue).
Pliant Products and their Potential Economic Moat
The investment mid-horizon focus will be on the state-of-the-art SOFC technology produced by BE- The potential market for hydrogen-powered solutions in terms of both electricity generation and production, aiding net-zero emission goals. One of the potential economic moats provided by BE would be the superior power density relative to solar PV facilities- In terms of density per unit energy generated, 1MW of energy would require 125 times the amount of space relative to Bloom Energy servers. Another would be the efficient production and subsequent storage of hydrogen through the quintessential process of electrolysis, using BE's new high-temperature electrolyzer. As seen in the figure, electrical energy demand is negatively correlated to the amount of heat supplied, and with BE electrolyzer's temperature of 700-850 Degrees Celsius, total base energy demand for electrolysis is decreased to 13.8MJ/kg, and a further 3.5MJ/kg is provided by heat. This is around 30% more efficient relative to the 15.9MJ/kg needed for Solid Oxide Electrolysis cell's (SOEC) typical low temperature electrolysis counterparts.

Furthermore, global warming has worsened around the globe, with 2019 being the second hottest year on record, and 30% of the world experiencing deadly heatwaves more than 20 days a year. When we turn towards the quantification of opportunity costs due to natural disasters, the focus is not on the cost of electricity, but rather the cost of not having electricity. The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) estimates the US national cost of power interruptions and power-quality events tallied up to over $119 billion per year. This includes industries with crucial need for uninterrupted power, including the healthcare industry, manufacturing, and data centers. BE mitigates this risk by providing an independent and clean microgrid.

Key Personnel
BE is led by its founder and CEO, KR Sridhar, Ph.D., with experience as advisor of NASA's Mars program developing technology to sustain life on Mars, and cited as "one of the top five futurists investing tomorrow, today", according to Fortune Magazine. Furthermore, Venkat V., Ph.D., is CTO, providing 35 years of experience in process and cost optimization. BE has over 1711 employees as of FY2020, with over a thousand being located in the US.
