News] Australian firm wins US$71m Hanwha contract for remote weapon systems Hanwha Aerospace has awarded a US$71 million contract to Electro Optic Systems (EOS) to supply enhanced R400 remote weapon systems (RWS) for Australia’s next-generation infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) program. Through Hanwha Defence Australia, the multi-year agreement supports the procurement of 129 AS21 Redback IFVs for the Australian Defence Force. EOS will manufacture the systems at its Canberra facility, leveraging a domestic supply chain of more than 100 Australian companies. The R400 family is already fielded by militaries in Australia, North America, Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia; EOS has sold over 2,500 units globally, with more than 700 delivered or contracted for the Australian Army. EOS CEO Andreas Schwer called the deal a win for Australian industry and a demonstration of the company’s close collaboration with Hanwha Defence Australia to meet the Army’s operational requirements. This development highlights the growing depth of Australia–Korea defence industrial collaboration, generating jobs, enabling technology transfer and expanding opportunities for suppliers across both markets.
