$NVO Novo Nordisk announced results from the OASIS 4 phase 3 trial showing that its oral Semaglutide 25 mg (Wegovy® in pill form) achieved significant weight loss in people with obesity.
After 64 weeks, participants taking the pill lost an average of 16.6% of body weight compared to 2.7% with placebo, with over a third losing at least 20%. Even when accounting for non-adherence, average weight loss was 13.6% versus 2.2% with placebo.
The pill also improved cardiovascular risk factors and daily physical activity, with a safety and tolerability profile consistent with injectable Wegovy®. The most common side effects were mild to moderate gastrointestinal issues such as nausea and vomiting.
Novo has submitted the drug to the US FDA for approval as the first oral GLP-1 treatment for chronic weight management, with a decision expected by the end of 2025. Production has already begun in the US.
