New Fortress Energy Inc. (NASDAQ:NFE) stock surged 23% in pre-market trading Wednesday after the company announced a milestone agreement with Puerto Rico’s government for long-term gas supply. The energy infrastructure company has reached agreement on contract terms with Puerto Rico’s Third-Party Procurement Office and Public-Private Partnerships Authority for a 7-year liquefied natural gas supply deal. The contract is currently under review for approval by the Financial Oversight and Management Board of Puerto Rico. Under the gas supply agreement, NFE will provide up to 75 TBtu of natural gas annually, with minimum annual take-or-pay volumes of 40 TBtu, potentially increasing to 50 TBtu if certain conditions are met. The deal aims to replace expensive, higher-emission liquid fuels with cleaner natural gas. Pricing for most volumes is set at 115% of Henry Hub plus $7.95/MMBtu, while natural gas supplied to San Juan units 5 & 6 (historically consuming about 20 TBtu annually) will be priced at 115% of Henry Hub plus $6.50/MMBtu. The company plans to supply the volumes through its 1.4 MTPA Fast LNG facility offshore Altamira, Mexico, which began operations in the fourth quarter of 2023 and is currently producing above nameplate capacity. "Matching our LNG production with long term offtake has always been our goal. This locks in sustainable long-term margins for NFE and provides a foundation of financial stability for our company," said Chris Guinta, CFO of New Fortress Energy. The agreement complements NFE’s existing 25-year supply contract with Energiza for a new 550 MW power plant under development in Puerto Rico.
