Demnach könnte die Mutation noch ansteckender sein als die britische Version des Erregers. Forscher in Johannesburg hegen außerdem den Verdacht, dass vorhandene Therapien und Impfstoffe optimiert werden müssen. Die südafrikanische Coronavirus-Variante 501Y.V2 könnte sich womöglich stärker ausbreiten als bislang gedacht. Zudem könnten Antikörper-Therapien und Impfstoffe deutlich an Wirksamkeit gegen diesen Erregertyp einbüßen. Von diesen Ergebnissen berichten Wissenschaftler in zwei Fachartikeln, die vor der Veröffentlichung noch nicht durch unabhängige Fachkollegen begutachtet wurden. Die Forscher schreiben weiter, dass die Mutationen auch dazu führen könnten, dass sich Covid-19-Genesene mit der neuen Variante ein zweites Mal anstecken. Die Coronavirus-Variante 501Y.V2 - auch als B.1.351 bekannt - wurde in Südafrika zuerst entdeckt und ist mittlerweile in zahlreichen Ländern, auch in Deutschland, nachgewiesen. Sie zeichnet sich unter anderem durch mehrere Mutationen aus, die das sogenannte Spike-Protein des Virus verändern. Dieses Eiweiß nutzt das Virus, um sich an die Körperzellen anzuheften und schließlich in sie einzudringen. Variante heftet sich in Simulation besser an Zellen Die Gruppe um Gard Nelson von der Firma ImmunityBio in Culver City im US-Bundesstaat Kalifornien untersuchte die Auswirkungen der genetischen Veränderungen mithilfe von Computersimulationen. Sie bezogen drei Mutationen in einer zentralen Region des Spike-Proteins in ihre Untersuchung ein. Die Analyse zeigte, dass das Virus dank der drei Mutationen noch besser an die Zellen anheften kann als etwa die mutierte britische Variante, für die ebenfalls eine bessere Übertragbarkeit angenommen wird. Die effektivere Bindung macht das Virus also ansteckender. Das Spike-Protein ist auch der Ort, an dem die Antikörper angreifen, die das Immunsystem nach einer Infektion oder einer Impfung bildet oder die im Rahmen einer Therapie verabreicht werden.
