Ist vom 18.11.2020: While the votes in the Untied States federal election were slow to come in, a clear winner has emerged right away: cannabis.
The momentum for cannabis legalization is growing.
In five states – New Jersey, Arizona, South Dakota, Montana and Mississippi – voters approved ballot measures to loosen restrictions on cannabis.
A majority of Americans now support federal legalization, and in ballot measure after ballot measure, they are making it clear. Voters clearly understand the opportunity that sound, evidence-based cannabis policy offers.
At Aurora, the U.S. CBD market continues to be one of our core business pillars. So this is a big moment for us: it shows growing, bipartisan acceptance of the economic and health benefits the cannabis industry can bring.
And on a personal level - as the founder of Reliva, which is now Aurora’s CBD business, and as an American in the cannabis business – this is also a big moment for me: the opportunity my partners and I spotted in 2018 is now coming to fruition.
But we will take advantage of that opportunity in the same manner that we approach the rest of our business: with fiscal discipline, focus, a measured approach to investment and a clear drive towards profitability.
A long-term play
Despite this welcome progress legalization will not happen overnight. We expect that, despite popular support, we are still many years away from a federally legalized consumer market.
In the near term, that means participating in these new markets in strategic and responsible ways, such as exploring opportunities to transfer intellectual property and looking to sign licensing agreements.
It also means taking best practices from other markets and applying them to the U.S. In the two years since cannabis was legalized in Canada, we have learned that consumers value access and health benefits, but they also value public education on safe consumption and strictly enforced prohibitions on sales of cannabis to minors. When it comes to these new markets, these are valuable lessons.
In the long term, that means looking to be a partner to governments looking to develop regulatory frameworks for consumer and medical cannabis.
Our advantage at Aurora is that we have done this before. We have successfully navigated compliance and regulatory frameworks in Canada and around the world. By the time the U.S. is ready for cannabis, we’ll be ready for the U.S. And in the meantime, we’ll continue to expand in key markets like Israel, Germany and Poland.
Everything we have learned in Canada and abroad will be applicable to the U.S. when the time is right.
The future is now
Regardless of the final vote tally, it is clear that cannabis has the momentum. The time is now to improve financial systems, address social inequities, and realize the potential of sound, evidence-based cannabis public policy.
We are focused on and optimistic for the U.S. CBD market and long-term prospects for legalization.
The opportunity afforded by sound cannabis policy in the United States is there for the taking. And the election results show that Americans increasingly want to seize it.

By the time the U.S. is ready for cannabis, we’ll be ready for the U.S. And in the meantime, we’ll continue to expand in key markets like Israel, Germany and Poland."
