With the solid data of today, Arbutus undoubtedly has taken the pole (lead) position in hepatitis B Functional Cure race. The 75% rate drop of HBsAg declines below 100 IU/ml is a major achievement. To put it in perspective, its nearest competitor, the JNJ-3989 from Arrowhead pharmaceuticals and Johnson & Johnson joint venture achieved only 39% sustained HbsAg decline over a similar study period. The JNJ-3989 results generated great interest and excitement when presented a year ago It is well accepted that hepatitis B functional cure requires combination treatment and ABUS is just doing that with Assembly Biosciences (ASMB) in the combination trial of vebicorvir, Arbutus’s AB-729 and standard-of-care nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NrtI). Better still, ABUS are coming up with AB-836, likely to be a much better capsid inhibitor than vebicorvir. In a nutshell, ABUS has the best-in class treatment that can achieve functional cure of hepatitis B.
