Some context on why this matters: As context windows get longer, the KV cache becomes one of the biggest bottlenecks for inference, both in latency and memory. Most efforts to shrink it focus on sharing the cache across layers or heads. In the Gemma 4 technical report, the team applied this technique in their global attention layers (about 1 in every 6 layers, given their 5:1 local-to-global ratio), skipping it in the smaller E2B/E4B models. Combined with KV cache sharing and their p-RoPE positional encoding, this contributed to a 37.5% reduction in global KV cache footprint as part of their long-context efficiency stack. Genuinely satisfying to see an idea move from "does this even work" in a paper to a shipped line item in a frontier open-weight model's technical report, in production, at scale.
