Carney to add mining and energy projects to major projects list, sources say
Canada Nickel is developing the Crawford nickel cobalt project near Timmins, Ont., which contains the world’s second-largest reserve of nickel. The Toronto-based nickel company plans to supply the critical mineral to Canada’s nascent electric-vehicle battery industry.
• Major Projects List Addition: Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to add at least four mining and energy developments to the government’s major projects list.
• Projects Included: The projects include the Ksi Lisims LNG project, Ontario’s Crawford nickel project, New Brunswick’s Sisson mine, and a hydroelectric project in Iqaluit.
• Purpose of the List: The Major Projects Office was set up to expedite infrastructure and resource development proposals to reduce Canada’s economic reliance on the United States.
• Sisson Mine Project: An open pit tungsten and molybdenum mine project northwest of Fredericton, New Brunswick, with funding from the Carney government and the U.S. Department of Defence.
• LNG Project: A $10-billion LNG export terminal and a $12-billion pipeline project in the Prince Rupert area of British Columbia, being developed by the Nisga’a Nation.
• Crawford Nickel Cobalt Project: A nickel project near Timmins, Ontario, containing the world’s second-largest reserve of nickel, with investment from Taykwa Tagamou Nation.
• Project Name: Iqaluit Nukkiksautiit hydro development.
• Project Description: A 15- to 30-megawatt hydroelectric project proposed by Nunavut Nukkiksautiit Corp.
• Funding: $6 million from the federal government through CanNor.

Critical minerals, electrification key to strategy
Three of the new projects — the Sisson Mine in New Brunswick, the Nouveau Monde Graphite mine and Crawford Nickel in Ontario — focus on critical minerals.
Sources say Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson is set to announce the Crawford project in Timmins, Ont., on Thursday.
The proposed mine is currently in the permitting stage, having passed the feasibility step in 2023, and is planned as an open-pit mine. An economic impact study found it has the capacity to create about 1,000 direct and 3,000 indirect jobs.

Leaks, Leaks, Leaks
I woke up this morning to a rather interesting news headline: “Ontario Nickel Mine on Mark Carney’s Special Project List, Insider Says”, in reference to Canada Nickel Company’s Crawford Project.
The article went on to say “According to a senior government source, who is not authorized to speak publicly on the issue, it is under serious consideration for the next list of projects the liberals will seek to advance to the Major Projects office, the agency overseeing approvals.”
This is music to my ears, with $CNC.V sitting at ~50% of the Case Resources portfolio. Lets think about the possible reasoning behind the leak here:
A genuine leak from a government official, who may be long the stock.
A purposeful leak from the government in order to maintain an orderly market. A sudden announcement on Thursday might result in trading ceasing for the day, as we saw with several projects prior to the G7 critical minerals deal announcements.
A fake leak by someone who wishes to run something of a “pump and dump” scheme.
A hoax, for hoaxes sake.
To me, this remains a classic “heads, we win, tails, we win big” scenario. If Crawford isn’t on Carney’s list, the mine is still going to get built - it may just take a bit longer. If they are on the list - we are in for a very good week indeed!
