They also have debts to suppliers etc where parent company have issued a so called comfort letter. It is costly to exit UK so they try to save it instead. Regarding Italy and Spain, they generated a negative profit around €9m each. This will be visible as +€18m in the future. UK loss+debt is much larger.

Interesting tidbit from the UK market: Our competitor Mindful Chef had quite a year in 2024. Revenue was up almost 10% from 51m to 56m and net profit went from -1,2m to +7,97m. 14,2% net margin is pretty insane. Mindful Chef is majority owned by Nestlé. Cost of sales was down from 34m to 30m, gross profit was up over 50%! Maybe they finally got the sourcing and buying power of Nestlé? Administrative expenses were also way down. Overall very impressive and I'm looking forward to their 2025 report, to see if this was just a one-off year or the new normal for Mindful Chef.

The UK is a real mystery to me. In 2023 Hellofresh had some writedowns in the UK, but without these writedowns, they were running the business at a 1% net margin. Not too bad after years of losses. 2024 (-20m€) and 2025 (-38m€) saw increasing losses again. In 2024 the gross profit was down a point and administrative expenses were up almost 2.5 percentage points. Maybe they had to pay for some layoffs/restructurings? Maybe higher marketing expenses? The revenue in 2024 was down 5% in the UK, so not sure about that. In the past the former CFO also talked about an initial margin drag in international mealkits from continued fulfillment center ramp-up in Germany and the UK. I think these came at a cost of 20m per year.

Factor seems to going very well looking at reviews. UK still a challenge. UK is the larger challenge and is loss making and much harder to turn.

Ein Lacher zum Wochenende. Einige von uns legen ja schon Jahre Körbchen zum Geld verdienen. Solange wie nichts davon im Chat steht, wird das auch nix. Vielleicht bald wieder. Ich wünsche Euch ein schönes Wochenende.

Ansonsten gab es immerhin auch eine positive Neuigkeit von The Pets Table. Man kam vor ziemlich genau einem Jahr in die Regale von 201 Walmarts in den USA und ich hätte damit gerechnet, dass dieser Schritt deutlich zu früh kommt und man schnell wieder ausgelistet wird. Der Brand ist schon noch sehr jung und unbekannt. Gestern hat man allerdings bekanntgegeben, dass man von nun an in über 600 Stores von Walmart gelistet ist. Damit ist man in 600 von 4.600 Stores vertreten. Der Umsatz ist immer sehr schwer zu schätzen, dürfte aber alleine über diese Stores ein paar Millionen im Jahr ausmachen. Gefällt mir gut, dass man hier nicht nur auf D2C setzt, sondern auch weitere Verkaufskanäle aufbaut und sich insgesamt breiter und unabhängiger von D2C aufstellt. Bei Petsmart ist man ja auch schon in den Stores vertreten. Vermutlich ist man deswegen in letzter Zeit im Direktvertrieb etwas zurückhaltender. Die Listung bei Walmart dürfte einige Kapazitäten im Unternehmen binden. Die Entwicklung bei The Pets Table gefällt mir immer noch super.

Also ich habe am Dienstag auch mal wieder ein paar Aktien gekauft. Die Bewertung ist weiterhin so verlockend, da konnte ich nicht widerstehen. Ich bin wirklich gespannt, was Hellofresh bei einem Verkauf wert wäre. Vor ein paar Tagen ist ja Huel von Danone übernommen worden. Sicherlich vom Produkt her nicht so richtig vergleichbar, aber trotzdem ein interessanter Anhaltspunkt. Huel hat FY24 £214 Millionen Umsatz gemacht und Danone hat 860 Millionen Pfund bezahlt.
