Platypus Minerals Ltd (ASX:pLP)(“Platypus” or “Company”) is pleased to announce that Lepidico Ltd (“Lepidico”) has entered into a licensing agreement (“Agreement”) for its proprietary L-Max® technology with European Metals Holdings Limited (ASX:EMH)(“European Metals”).
Under the terms of the Agreement, Lepidico has granted European Metals an option to acquire a licence to use the L-Max® technology for the Cinovec project in the Czech Republic for consideration of $20,000 in cash.
The option will be valid for 12 months, and can be renewed for a further 12 months by payment of an additional option fee of $25,000.
Upon exercise of the option, Lepidico will issue a licence and European Metals will:
Pay Lepidico $30,000 cash and issue to Lepidico 890,215 European Metals fully paid ordinary shares Undertake an L-Max® mini-plant test run on Cinovec ore
Pay Lepidico a gross product royalty of 2% on all sales relating to lithium chemicals and other by-products produced using the L-Max® technology.
In 2015, European Metals completed a Scoping Study utilising the L-Max process to successfully precipitate battery grade lithium carbonate from Cinovec ore.
European Metals reports the key results of the Scoping Study and associated test work to be:
98% of lithium recovered via flotation to concentrate
99.5% of lithium extracted from concentrate via leaching
Short leach time; 97.6% of the lithium recovered in only 4 hours
99.56% pure lithium carbonate precipitated from a sample of Cinovec ore
By-product potassium sulphate also successfully precipitated
Estimated operating cost approximately US$1,500 per tonne of lithium carbonate produced (after potassium sulphate credit).
On a project basis, and after tin and tungsten credits, European Metals anticipates operating cost estimates for lithium carbonate production to reduce further.
Cinovec is a historical tin mine with a significant undeveloped lithium-tin resource comprising an Inferred Mineral Resource of 514.8 Mt @ 0.43% Li2O and 79.7 Mt @ 0.23% Sn.
European Metals reports that metallurgical testwork as part of a Scoping Study produced battery grade lithium carbonate and high grade tin concentrate.
A potential production cost of approximately $1,500 per tonne of lithium carbonate was indicated, excluding tin and tungsten credits.
Cinovec is located in an active mining region in central Europe close to key infrastructure.
PLP Lepidico Chairman Gary Johnson commented:
“We are very pleased to establish a relationship with European Metals.
The Cinovec project is a prime example of how L-Max® can be utilised to potentially unlock value at a project by treating non- conventional sources of lithium such as zinnwaldite, which is in abundance at Cinovec.”

Ne ganz guter Erklärung aus dem HotCopper Forum.. Bitteschön
L - Max process will exract 99.9% pure lithium cabonate from tailings, waste and mica deposits from spodumene. You can see where this is going Pioneer and Platypus will probably be in discussion about this topic in the future along with many other company's. Some company's have already signed with Platypus to aquire a license to use L -Max. When it get commercialized it will be a game changer. Watch this space.
Lepidolite is an uncommon mica and has only in the past decade become available on the mineral market in large quantities. Lepidolite is an ore of lithium and forms in granitic masses that contain a substantial amount of lithium. The lithium content in lepidolite does vary greatly however and low lithium lepidolite is nearly useless as an ore of lithium. The typical violet to pink color of lepidolite is characteristic and is the only field test available to identify lepidolite from other micas. Pink muscovite or very pale lepidolite may confuse an identification.
Lepidolite, like other micas, has a layered structure of lithium aluminum silicate sheets weakly bonded together by layers of potassium ions. These potassium ion layers produce the perfect cleavage. lepidolite crystals accompany such other lithium bearing minerals such as tourmaline, amblygonite and spodumene and can add greatly to the value of these specimens. A rock made of granular pink lepidolite and red to pink tourmaline is used as an ornamental stone for carving. Single large plates or "books" of lepidolite can have appealling violet color and make attractive mineral specimens.
Lepidico Limited Now Platypus minerals ( PLP ) operates as a lithium exploration company. Its sources include lithium bearing micas, such as lepidolite and zinnwaldite, and other lithium minerals, including amblygonite. The company serves the electric battery market. Lepidico Limited was incorporated in 2011 and is based in Belmont, Australia.
Platypus is seeking acquisitions. Lepidico/ Platypus is also actively pursuing other lithium project acquisitions and joint venture opportunities and is currently in advanced discussions with a number of parties to secure additional projects rich in lithium micas. Go PLP and PIO.
L - Max Unlike other lithium extraction processes, the Lepidico process does not require of significant amounts of land for evaporation ponds, or costly pyrometallurigical processing routes in order to extract and recover the valuable lithium.
The hydrometallurgical Lepidico process involves direct atmospheric leaching of lithium mica impurity removal stages with subsequent lithium carbonate precipitation. It differs considerably from the processing of spodumene, which requires high temperature decrepitation and sulfate roasting prior to lithium recovery. This novel process is simpler and is expected to have lower energy requirements than existing lithium recovery processes. The processing of lithium micas also results in the production of potassium and rare metal containing by-products, which will significantly offset the operating costs of lithium carbonate production.
The process has been extensively tested in a series of batch laboratory tests using ore from Lithium Australia and European Metals Holdings. The flotation of lithium mica from the pegmatite ore is a useful upgrade step and was successful, achieving high lithium recovery. Leaching of the lithium micas has achieved very high dissolution rates in relatively short leaching times.
The results metallurgical test work program demonstrated the viability producing battery grade lithium carbonate and potassium containing fertiliser from the mica material.
