Meinetwegen soll es lieber langsam steigen. Bei einem rasanten Kurssprung kommt nur Unruhe rein. So richtig positiv wird es sich erst entwickeln, wenn die ersten Tests gut ausfallen und man in etwa abschätzen kann, wie viel man vom Impfstoff produzieren kann. Aktuell bleiben die Kurse auf Grund der Nachrichtenlage relativ konstant.

NewLink Genetics Corp. (NLNK) is in talks with drugmaker Merck & Co. (MRK) to scale up production of NewLink’s experimental Ebola vaccine, according to a person familiar with the matter. Merck has production technology, called Vero, that could be used to increase manufacturing capacity for the vaccine, said the person, who asked not to be named because the two companies haven’t yet announced the partnership. The production technique uses cells from African green monkeys to produce vaccines. It’s already used to make RotaTeq, a vaccine for children. NewLink’s vaccine is in safety trials, and the Ames, Iowa-based company has said it could produce 12 million doses by April depending on the amount of vaccine necessary to generate an immune response. To make the vaccine on a larger scale NewLink needs help with manufacturing, keeping the drug at a stable temperature and packaging it into vials, Charles Link, the company’s chief executive officer, said yesterday in an interview in London. The Ebola outbreak has infected more than 15,000 people, mostly in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, killing more than 5,000. Drugmakers have been racing to find a treatment or vaccine for the deadly virus. GlaxoSmithKline Plc, Johnson & Johnson, Novavax Inc. and Profectus Biosciences Inc. are also developing vaccines. Increasing Production NewLink said Nov. 6 that it was in talks with a large pharmaceutical company to enhance the development of the vaccine. The company currently has a contract manufacturing agreement with IDT Biologika GmbH in Germany, Link said. Link declined to comment on whether NewLink had come to an agreement with Merck. Pam Eisele, a spokeswoman for Whitehouse Station, New Jersey-based Merck, declined to comment. NewLink licensed its vaccine in 2010 from the Canadian government, where it was developed. The shot contains a single gene of the Ebola virus that has been inserted into another pathogen, called vesicular stomatitis virus, which commonly causes mouth ulcers in cattle, horses and pigs. The vaccine prompts the body to generate antibodies against Ebola, but can’t cause the disease. Merck’s vaccine business earned $5.18 billion insales last year. It once included a unit that became Okairos AG, which was researching an Ebola vaccine. GlaxoSmithKline Plc bought Okairos last year and is now developing the vaccine.
