AI developers are pushing toward higher usage-based pricing as demand for generative AI continues to rise. OpenAI, Anthropic and Microsoft's GitHub have started moving beyond simple flat-fee subscriptions, with heavier users potentially paying more when AI tools produce slide decks, draft emails, debug code or run longer agent-based tasks.
The change reflects rising pressure on AI labs that are spending heavily on chips, data centers and talent. Anthropic has shifted some business customers toward actual-usage billing, GitHub has introduced a new usage-based system after monthly allotments, and OpenAI executives have suggested AI could eventually be priced more like electricity or water.
This shift may force companies to take a closer look at the return on their AI spending. Walmart has capped staff use of an in-house AI agent, while Uber Technologies is limiting monthly employee spending on certain AI coding tools to $1,500 per tool. Lower-cost alternatives from Alibaba Group's Qwen and DeepSeek could also gain more attention if businesses begin routing simpler tasks away from more expensive models.
