Main investments would be made in China’s western regions, where there was a surplus of power supply but a shortage of grids that could transmit the energy, according to Huatai Securities.

China’s western region also houses data centres built by tech giants including Huawei Technologies, Tencent Holdings and Alibaba Group Holding under a 2022-initiated national scheme that transfers data generated by companies on the east coast to the resources-rich west for computing and storage.

Uber is a prime example of how Tencent continues to expand its ubiquitous mini-program ecosystem in China and overseas. On Thursday, Tencent said merchants from more than 100 markets globally had launched mini-programs on WeChat that serve Chinese tourists as well as local residents. Some of the markets with 1 million monthly active users last year included Singapore, Japan and Hong Kong-Macau combined.
