Vietnam galt lange als große Hoffnung, Chinas Vormachtstellung zu brechen. Masan High-Tech Materials, Betreiber der Nui-Phao-Mine, positionierte sich als ethische Alternative für westliche Abnehmer. Doch ein Blick auf die aktuellen Betriebsdaten ist ernüchternd. Masan kämpft mit den physikalischen Gegebenheiten des Bergbaus: Sinkende Erzgehalte verteuern die Produktion der benötigten Konzentratmengen zunehmend. Obwohl das Unternehmen seit der Übernahme des deutschen Konzerns HC Starck über exzellente Verarbeitungstechnologie verfügt, fehlt es ihm zunehmend an einer eigenen, kosteneffizienten Rohstoffversorgung. Selbst die kürzlich genehmigte Erweiterung von Nui Phao hin zum Untertagebau wird kurzfristig keine Ergebnisse bringen. Masan kann die von China hinterlassene Lücke nicht allein durch höhere Produktionsmengen schließen, da die Mine ihren Produktionshöhepunkt offenbar überschritten hat. Die Hoffnung, Vietnam könne China ersetzen, schwindet.
