Antofagasta, August 6, 2025 To whom it may concern: I am writing to you in my capacity as a Member of the Chamber of Deputies of the Republic and representative of the Region of Antofagasta, exercising the authority granted by Article 9 of Constitutional Organic Law of the National Congress No. 18,918, in response to a serious complaint I have received. According to this complaint, the lives and health of workers in my region are at risk due to deficient safety conditions, which must be inspected urgently. The complaint concerns a very serious incident at Albemarle’s chemical plant located in La Negra. The incident is said to have occurred when an acid pipe burst, exposing workers to a possible fatal accident. In addition to the background information I received, one can observe poor safety conditions and deficient maintenance of the facilities, to the point that a motor can be seen operating with its propeller uncovered while running. As you can imagine, these are unacceptable working conditions for the employees—especially given the area in which they work, as this is a company that extracts lithium. Therefore, it is completely inexplicable and constitutes incomprehensible negligence, bordering on willful misconduct (“dolo”), to maintain such precarious conditions. Along with requesting the urgent intervention of both oversight agencies—so that the lives and health of the men and women working at that plant are protected in a coordinated and proper manner—I strongly request that Albemarle be expressly warned that any investigative procedure aimed at identifying those who filed this complaint anonymously violates the Constitution and labor legislation and that, accordingly, no type of reprisal can exist. The company must limit itself to correcting and remedying the breaches and deviations that have seriously endangered the integrity of its own workers. Given the recent loss of six lives in Rancagua, neither SERNAGEOMIN nor the Labor Directorate can remain inactive or delay their field actions. The safety and lives of people who work in mining must be our highest priority. I trust in a decisive and timely action by both agencies, one that will give workers and their families the peace of mind that their fundamental rights are being safeguarded. I would appreciate being kept informed, in detail, of the actions you will undertake to protect the lives and health of Albemarle’s workers.
