Short activist rips into one of the market’s hottest growth stories Tom RichardsonMarkets reporter and commentator May 20, 2022 – 11.51am A battle for control of one of the world’s largest lithium deposits in the Democratic Republic of Congo is threatening to derail one of the sharemarket’s hottest growth stories. Shares in lithium explorer AVZ Minerals have rocketed nearly 20-fold since 2019 to a valuation of $2.8 billion. On Friday, London-based short-focused hedge fund research firm Boatman Capital said it obtained legal documents that suggested AVZ’s ownership stake in the DRC’s Manono lithium mine could eventually be diluted from 75 per cent to 36 per cent. The escalating fight for ownership of potentially the world’s most valuable lithium deposit pits China’s state-backed Zijin Mining against Perth-headquartered AVZ amid a history of opaque dealings around ownership rights. “We believe that AVZ Minerals is in the process of being outmanoeuvred by a group of powerful Chinese battery manufacturers, who are plotting to take control of the Manono lithium project,” said Boatman Capital founder David Robertson. “We think that, at best, AVZ faces months or years of legal fights to block Zijin Mining and to claim shares from [vendor] Dathomir Mining Resources. At worst, AVZ will lose control of Manono and be left with just 36 per cent of the project. We have obtained evidence that makes us think the likely outcome will be negative for AVZ.”
