PayPal Holdings has teamed with OpenAI to allow ChatGPT users buy products found through the AI chatbot with their PayPal accounts. The payments company said Tuesday that, under the new partnership, ChatGPT users would be able to complete purchases instantly using a PayPal wallet. As of this month, ChatGPT had more than 800 million weekly users, OpenAI has said. "ChatGPT is growing incredibly fast," PayPal Chief Executive Alex Chriss said. "Commerce is going to be the next step of that evolution." PayPal would also support payments processing for merchants that use OpenAI's checkout feature and extend its global merchant network to OpenAI. The arrangement would allow millions of small businesses and major retailers in PayPal's network to sell their products through ChatGPT. Chriss said one of the biggest challenges in agentic commerce, or online shopping that uses generative AI agents, is ensuring customers can trust the merchants they are engaging with and that merchants can be sure they are connecting with a real consumer. "We can make that transaction happen in a way that's safe and secure," the PayPal CEO said. The team-up comes about a month after San Jose, Calif., company said it had formed a multiyear partnership with Alphabet's Google, under which PayPal's branded checkout and other services would be integrated into Google's products. The companies said they would also jointly develop standards for agentic commerce, and advocate for the adoption of best practices. That includes Google's Agent Payments Protocol, which it described as an open-source protocol for AI agents to make transactions on behalf of users. PayPal said Tuesday that the partnership with OpenAI is an expansion of its AI strategy that goes beyond commerce. It will be scaling access to ChatGPT Enterprise, a version of the chatbot designed for businesses, to its over 24,000 employees, with the aim of accelerating product development and improving customer experiences.
