The European Commission approved Denmark and Sweden's proposed restructuring aid of up to 1.3 billion euros for Scandinavian Airlines System ( SAS , SAS/DKK.CO), or SAS. The EU regulator said Monday the subsidy, which is part of SAS' 2022 insolvency proceedings and the reorganization of its Swedish and Danish businesses, will support the restoration of the airline company's long-term viability while reducing competition distortions.

The European Commission has today declared the Kingdom of Denmark's and theKingdom of Sweden's participation in SAS' restructuring process compatiblewithapplicable EU State aid rules. The approval marks another important stepforwardfor SAS in its transformation plan and in the on-going restructuringproceedings.

SAS SAS said Friday the European Commission cleared its restructuring plan and confirmed that the participation of Denmark and Sweden complies with EU state aid regulations. The airline company's business reorganization in Sweden is part of its chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in the US.

Scandinavian airline SAS received European Union approval for state aid of up to 15 billion Swedish kronor ($1.41 billion) from Denmark and Sweden as part of the company's financial-restructuring plans. The European Commission--the bloc's executive arm and the enforcer of antitrust policy--on Friday cleared the aid package, saying it would enable the company to restore its long-term viability while minimizing competition issues. The carrier filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2022 as it worked to push through a comprehensive financial restructuring.
