I think we are familiar with the speculative but generally accepted rumor that Tesla will start producing its own batteries based on their acquisition of Maxwell technologies.
Lithium Ion batteries have mostly two ingredients in them: lithium and graphite. Neither of those come from domestic sources, with most lithium coming from South America and most graphite coming from China. Westwater Resources (WWR) is a small cap publicly traded corporation that mines both, in addition to uranium which I won't comment on because it is not relevant to Tesla in the near term. WWR retooled a few years ago to do battery products by purchasing a graphite plant and exploring for lithium in what we would all consider in hindsight to be an excellent bet.
WWR owns the only near-term graphite mining site in the USA, and has several exploratory lithium brine sites in the country. Right now their plans are to create a pilot plant and process 20 tons of raw material they purchased in order to satisfy customer testing, and then by 2022 they will have completed their graphite mining and processing infrastructure. The graphite chemistry is incredibly important because that is where the energy is stored when the lithium ions are pulled across the electrolyte. There is also about 3x more graphite in a battery than lithium.
The supply of graphite in the world is about static, with threats of export controls from China. We certainly don't want to be dependent on them for energy infrastructure. Our best solution is to get the graphite right here. If Elon puts out his battery manufacturing plans as we suspect we can expect there to be a massive demand for the source materials and for them to look for the best accountability path.
Right now the needs we are meeting are whatever Panasonic can put out, plus whatever is going into laptops and smartphones. It's quite a bit, and the demand is expected to grow, but we all know that EVs are going to explode in the market and that battery needs are going to be huge. Manufacturing and quality are going to become very important. And as the Coronavirus has shown us, global markets can be quite finicky in emergencies. As costs get driven down, home batteries are going to become the norm, requiring even more graphite! There are 120M homes in the USA, and the energy storage problem is getting closer to being solved.
It is my opinion that WWR will become a major supplier of graphite and possibly lithium in the US and when it does there is going to be a huge demand. Everyone is talking about TSLA, but we better start talking about where the key minerals come from. There are some challenges ahead, such as passing manufacturer testing for the materials, and $54M in Capex outlays to build out the full production plant when the corporation only has about $10M in market cap, but they are debt free today and are heads down on making this happen.

Graphite angeblich hat Tesla dieses dort bestellt.
