These increases are pushing up defense system costs. The mineral squeeze underscores the U.S. military’s dependence on Chinese supply chains, giving Beijing leverage amid escalating tensions. U.S. defense firms rely on Chinese-sourced minerals for microelectronics, drone motors, night-vision equipment, missile-targeting systems, and satellites. Despite efforts to diversify, executives say many of these rare elements are uneconomical to produce outside China.
