The dive on the local market follows a brutal weekend on Wall Street and in London after the British pound fell to a 37-year low following new Prime Minister Liz Truss’s announcement of tax cuts. British Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng last week delivered a mini-budget promising the largest tax cuts since 1972 in a bid to salvage the economy after the Bank of England said it was in the early stages of a recession. And there was bad news for investors in the US last week too. The Federal Reserve issued the latest in its months-long series of hawkish interest rate projections, dashing any hopes traders were clinging to of softer monetary conditions. Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said on Wednesday it was becoming less likely the country would escape a recession. The Fed raised the US’ cash rate by three quarters of a percentage point to 3.25 per cent in its protracted fight against soaring inflation. “A failure to restore price stability would lead to greater pain later on,” Mr Powell said, confirming further interest rate hikes would occur before the year’s end. The weak start to the Australian trading week comes ahead of the release of retail sales figures on Wednesday and consumer price index inflation data for July and August on Thursday.
