China’s real strength is not mining... it is processing.
Across nearly every critical mineral, China controls a disproportionate share of global processing capacity. Mining is only the first step. Without refining, concentrate is useless.
That means even if the West ramps up domestic mining, it remains dependent if the material still has to be shipped to China for processing.
True independence requires rebuilding the entire value chain:
- Upstream mining
- Midstream refining and processing
- Downstream manufacturing integration
That capital rotation, away from asset-light globalization and toward resource sovereignty, will shape the next decades.
