Chinese firms bypass US Nvidia chip ban via Google, Microsoft Despite export controls by the United States government to prevent Chinese companies from purchasing Nvidia's advanced AI chips, these companies can still access these integrated circuits, by renting Nvidia-powered servers from data centers outside China operated by global firms like Google and Microsoft, The Information said on Wednesday. According to the media outlet, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure offer Nvidia chip rentals to Chinese companies and AI startups through data centers abroad, in what is seen as a loophole in US export regulations. Numerous cloud providers in Europe and Asia also offer similar services, enabling Chinese companies to bypass restrictions. The US Commerce Department categorizes cloud computing as a service, not a product, exempting it from export controls. However, this undermines US efforts to restrict Chinese access to this technology, raising security concerns.
