Investors in the European defense sector are awaiting the results of the U.S. presidential election in less than a month, but stocks should continue to grow, Morgan Stanley analysts write in a research note. A victory by Kamala Harris could yield policy continuity for the defense sector, while a potential return of Donald Trump to the White House could have mixed implications, the analysts say. The sector is up 26% year-to-date, but down about 10% in the past three months, due to reports of a potential de-escalation in the Ukraine war. German arms maker Rheinmetall and British defense blue-chip BAE Systems are best placed, the analysts add. Shares in Germany's Rheinmetall and Italy's Leonardo rise ahead of the closing of a joint-venture agreement between the two defence companies. On Tuesday, they are expected to close a JV agreement for Italian government armoured-vehicle contracts, worth up to 20 billion euros over more than a decade. After this milestone, Leonardo's next target will be to export the vehicles and participate in the development of the European Main Battle Tank, Equita analyst Martino De Ambroggi writes. Leonardo Chief Executive Roberto Cingolani is also expected to start talks with commercial-vehicles business Iveco for further collaboration, which he anticipated in the second-quarter results call. Rheinmetall shares are up 1.8% while Leonardo rises 1.5%. (cristina.gallardo@wsj.com)
