In the month following that strike, the S&P 500 was up 5.7%. Three months later, it was up 11.7%. Six months out, still up 13.5%. The twelve month return is not yet available since we are still within that window, but so far the market has treated that particular escalation as a non-event in terms of lasting damage. The Soleimani airstrike in January 2020 offers another useful data point. The market was up 1.9% one month after that event, but then the world changed entirely as COVID hit and we saw a 23.1% drawdown over three months that had nothing to do with Iran and everything to do with a global pandemic. The six month return was still negative at minus 4.2%, but twelve months out the S&P was up 14.4%. The Iran attacks on Israel in April 2024 showed a similar pattern of initial resilience, with the market up 1.9% at one month, 9.9% at three months and 13.5% at six months.
