Microsoft Stock May Be Over the Worst. How Data’s Giving It the Edge for AI Riches.

Microsoft stock looks to be leveling off after a dreadful stretch of trading for the software company. It is doubling down on artificial-intelligence investment and analysts at Benchmark Research are backing the AI push.
Microsoft shares closed down 0.2% at $369. Following a six-month period during which the stock dropped by more than a third and shed more than $1 trillion in market value, it has recovered slightly from lows of around $360.
Benchmark analyst Yi Fu Lee sees further gains ahead, initiating coverage of the stock with a Buy rating and $450 target price. The price target is based on applying an enterprise value-to-revenue ratio of 8.8 times on the forecast for Microsoft’s revenue in 2027.
“Microsoft is the true landlord in the technology sector since enterprise and consumer data are the rocket fuel to power the intelligence,” wrote Lee.
Microsoft’s possession of an enormous trove of enterprise and consumer data should drive customers to adopt its AI products, allowing for a long-term operating model profile of more than 10% revenue growth annually and around a 30% free cash flow margin, according to the Benchmark analyst.
The concern has been that Microsoft’s investment in AI will eat into its cash flows. This fiscal year, the company will spend more than $100 billion on capital expenditures, largely on data centers to support the technology. Its free cash flow margin is expected to stand at 21.8% this year.
Microsoft is only doubling down on its plans. The company said Wednesday that it is on track to invest $5.5 billion in cloud and artificial-intelligence infrastructure in Singapore through 2029, just a day after saying it would invest more than $1 billion in Thailand.
Meanwhile, Microsoft is negotiating a power-generation and supply agreement with Chevron and investment firm Engine No. 1 for a $7 billion power plant in Texas to provide electricity to a data center, Bloomberg reported. The companies didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment from Barron’s.
All those infrastructure and energy investments should eventually pay off, according to Benchmark’s Lee.
“We believe it is very shortsighted for investors to walk away from Microsoft as the AI investments made today are part of the longer term strategy to position the company as a relevant player in the AI super cycle adoption wave,” Lee wrote.
In particular, Lee argues that concerns about heavy capex investment are unwarranted as Microsoft already has cloud-computing contracts covering the majority of the useful life of the hardware it is buying. And while significant customer OpenAI is diversifying its backers, Lee reckons that Microsoft’s current stake in the ChatGPT developer is already worth $227 billion and the two companies are likely to continue their long-term relationship.
“We think it would be more concerning if Microsoft does not spend the cash today to add global capacity in securing power/energy, land/facilities, and GPU/CPU as the company will likely not have a seat at the table when AI/GenAI adoption fully ramps,” Lee wrote.
