‘Tens of Thousands’ Nvidia Chips Were Used to Train Grok 4.5. What It Means for the Stock. The launch of new artificial-intelligence models trained on its latest hardware could help it keep going. Nvidia stock was up 0.9% at $205.88 in premarket trading Thursday. It rose 3.7% on Wednesday as it looks to re-establish a floor at around the $200 level. Nvidia was named a Barron’s stock pick on May 13, when shares were trading at $226. There have been a couple of positive factors for Nvidia in recent days. It won a central-processing unit deal with AI start-up Perplexity, while technology-focused news outlet The Information reported that Beijing will let Chinese companies buy some Nvidia H200 chips. However, the biggest boost may come from Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which late on Wednesday announced its latest AI model, Grok 4.5, which it noted was trained across “tens of thousands” of Nvidia’s latest GB300 graphics-processing units. If Grok 4.5 proves to be competitive against the latest model releases from the likes of Claude-developer Anthropic and ChatGPT-developer OpenAI, it will be a reminder of the strengths of Nvidia’s hardware, even before mass shipments of Nvidia Vera Rubin chips, which are expected in the second half of the year. The early signs are good—data from independent research firm Artificial Analysis on the intelligence of large language models puts Grok 4.5 third overall, behind only Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 and OpenAI’s ChatGPT 5.5. Musk suggested in a post on social-media site X that Grok 4.5 could double in speed or even more, once SpaceX starts using internally developed software to optimize the model for Nvidia’s GB300 chips.
